The fifth graders have been studying the Ancient Greek civilization. The focus of this study has been defined by these four essential questions:
1. How do the cultural universals help us compare and contrast various communities?
2. How did geography and climate shape the way that this group of people lived? How did the geography and climate help this culture survive or not?
3. How do technology and trade affect the growth of a culture?
4. How did this group of people affect other groups of people over time? What lasting contributions do we have today?
Before researching, students built their background knowledge and chose four topics to pre-search. The topic with the best resources (amount and readability) determined their final choice. Students also crafted their own focus questions related to their topic that were linked back to the essential questions. These questions guided their research. Each student has created their own wiki to demonstrate what they learned.
